Our program has a long history of successful outcomes and we constantly strive to find ways to make our program an innovator in the industry.

Your relationship with our program does not end after surgery however. You are a part of the Western Bariatric Institute family and we are committed to providing you with exceptional care before surgery and beyond.

Western Bariatric Institute (WBI) surgeons are the weight loss experts in Reno and Northern Nevada. WBI is dedicated to the long-term success and health of our patients.

Weight-loss surgery is a tool that we can provide to you but your long-term success is dependent upon how you take the tool and the education we provide to you and implement changes into your daily lifestyle to ensure you meet your health and weight loss goals.

Am I a Candidate for Weight Loss Surgery?

Our genetic make-up plays a major role in gaining excess weight. It determines our “susceptibility” or “risk” to becoming overweight or obese. Our personalized attitudes also influence our behavior regarding what we eat and how much we engage in physical activities in our daily lives.

People who have a Body Mass Index (BMI) over 30 are considered to be obese. Morbid obesity is a chronic disease with symptoms that build over a period of time. It is defined as being 100 pounds or more over your ideal body weight or having a BMI of 40 or higher.

If you are obese, you may suffer from any one, or multiple, of the following:

Major co-morbidities

  • Type II Diabetes
  • Hypertension (high blood pressure)
  • Hyperlipidemia (high cholesterol, etc.)
  • Heart Disease
  • Sleep Apnea Syndrome

Minor co-morbidities

  • Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD)
  • Degenerative Arthritis
  • Depression
  • Urinary Incontinence
  • Menstrual irregularity and infertility

Morbid obesity increases the risk for a shorter life expectancy especially for individuals whose body weight exceeds twice their ideal body weight. This brings with it an increased risk of diabetes or heart attack, up to seven times greater than in non-obese persons.

WBI offers an exclusive support group and network in Northern Nevada, ranging from Carson City to Elko, as well as several follow-up classes to help keep you on track. Our surgeons & staff sincerely care about you and your success. Get started today!
